In 1958, American amateur astronomer Steve Slayton, the owner of a 20-inch telescope, while observing the Moon, noticed a certain object against its background. The celestial body quickly crossed the lunar disk and disappeared. Slayton concluded that the object was black and therefore not visible against a dark sky. The astronomer made calculations and tried to determine when the object would again be in the background of the moon.

At the calculated time, the object appeared at the point determined by Slayton. After observing the body, Steve determined its diameter (about 10 meters) and flight height (1-2 thousand km above the Earth). Too high speed and a strange trajectory led him to the conclusion about the artificial origin of the object, which he told the press.

In 1958, only two countries launched satellites: the USSR and the USA. However, in a hurry to announce to the world about each of their new achievements in the space race, neither the USSR nor the United States recognized the discovered celestial body as their own. The US military asked Slayton for the characteristics of the orbit and soon announced that not a single radar station had found a satellite.

The offended amateur astronomer invited reporters to the telescope and they observed with their own eyes a satellite that military astrophysicists with all their equipment cannot find. The press mocked the military. Amateur astronomer outsmarted NASA!

And the radar stations of the USSR and the USA still did not find the object, although scientists observed it visually against the background of the lunar or solar disk.

The satellite becomes the "Black Prince"

The secrets of the satellite multiplied. The military said that Slayton most likely observed a meteorite. All rockets are launched in the direction of the planet's rotation in order to overcome the earth's gravity. And the object discovered by Slayton rotates in the opposite direction. Therefore, it cannot be an artificial satellite launched from the Earth. And then for the first time the assumption was made that a satellite could be made not on Earth.

In 1974, the Soviet science fiction writer A. Kazantsev in the novel "Faetes" described the alien satellite "Black Prince", revolving around the Earth. The novel has been translated into several languages. The name of the satellite immediately stuck to the celestial object. That's how he got his name.

Find Gorky radiophysicists

After 20 years, Gorky radio physicists tested the supersensitive equipment they had created, which made it possible to determine the temperature of celestial bodies. During testing, an object with a temperature of over 200 degrees Celsius was detected. It was the "Black Prince", which now has one more riddle.

In 1991, American scientist Tom Erickson tried to explain the Black Prince's invisibility to radar systems. According to his version, the body is covered with a layer of graphite that absorbs radio waves. It is not yet possible to confirm or disprove this assumption. In 1998, astronauts of the American space shuttle Endeavor SNS-88 saw the Black Prince with their own eyes and took pictures of it. After examining them, scientists carefully concluded that these are fragments of artificial origin.

Mysterious satellite

An unknown object, which will later be called the "Black Prince", was first recorded in 1958 by the Arizona amateur astronomer Steve Slayton, but for a long time the extraterrestrial satellite was not recorded on official radars. As US military specialist Tom Erickson later determined, this was because the surface of the UFO was covered with graphite, which completely absorbs radio waves. For this reason, Soviet and American radar stations did not detect anything. But it was recorded at the end of the seventies by the radio physicists of the city of Gorky (now Nizhny Novgorod), who tested the latest supersensitive equipment. Scientists even prepared a report on this subject for the Tallinn Symposium on Extraterrestrial Civilizations, which took place in 1981, but for certain reasons of the Soviet era, no one allowed them to do this.

And only ten years later, that is, in 1998, the space shuttle Endeavor took photographs of the Black Knight, and these photographs are still considered the only convincing evidence that an extraterrestrial satellite exists in Earth orbit. By the way, it periodically sends radio signals that scientists still cannot decipher.

Dropped landing?

Today it has already been determined that the Black Knight has been orbiting our planet for approximately thirteen millennia, perhaps even an earthly satellite, only launched into orbit by representatives of a civilization that preceded mankind. There is also such a version - this is a fragment of a spaceship of unknown origin. By the way, at the end of the eighties, the Americans launched a communications satellite into orbit very close to the Black Knight's orbit, but the "American" soon disappeared from the radar, either when faced with a mysterious UFO, or disappeared for some other reason.

In general, much in this matter still remains a mystery, like the Black Knight itself, the name of which was invented by the Soviet science fiction writer Alexander Kazantsev. However, if we assume that an extraterrestrial satellite went out of orbit to drop troops on Earth (see the video, it is very similar to this), then the version of the debris immediately disappears, and the version that this is a prehistoric spacecraft does not stand up to criticism. It turns out that the "Black Knight" is still an extraterrestrial artificial satellite, and, most likely, a permanent observer of our civilization.

Since the launch of the first space satellite in history by the Soviet Union in 1957, more than 6,000 unmanned vehicles have been launched into Earth orbit by different countries. These artificial satellites served various purposes: communications, navigation, and reconnaissance.
However, there is a special object among them, called the "Black Knight".

According to the latest estimates, about 3,600 satellites remain in orbit, and far from all are functioning. As soon as these satellites complete their task and exhaust their predictable resource, they become space debris.

A number of these vehicles, including the largest of them, the International Space Station, are fairly easy to spot in the sky. But how to explain all the hype around the "Black Knight".

The story begins with Nikola Tesla, who allegedly heard sounds from outer space as early as 1899. He believed that these sounds may be emitted by representatives of intelligent life, and clearly not terrestrial. A few decades later, in 1968, astronomers confirmed that Tesla did indeed hear radio signals, but they were emitted by other natural objects in space.

Interestingly, Tesla himself never claimed to have heard signals coming from a satellite orbiting the Earth. However, this does not prevent a number of people from believing that the famous scientist heard transmissions from the Black Knight. In 1954, several newspapers, including the San Francisco Examiner and St. Louis Post-Dispatch published the theory of Donald Edward Keyhoe, a former Marine Corps officer and renowned UFO researcher.

Keyho claimed that extraterrestrial beings were visiting Earth. He also wrote several books in which he claimed that the US Air Force discovered two satellites orbiting the Earth in 1954, although such technology did not exist then. It should not be forgotten, however, that the mid-1950s were the heyday of the popularity of science fiction.

Keyhoe's books have been compared to those of H. G. Wells, Arthur C. Clarke, and Isaac Asimov. Along with a number of films and television shows, these stories fueled the public imagination of space travel and possible encounters with alien life. Skeptics decided that much of what Keyho wrote was to help promote his own books.

However, in 1960 during the Cold War, The Times also further stated that the US Navy was aware of a satellite with an unusual orbit. Initially, the magazine claimed that it was a Soviet spy, but later “revealed” that it was actually an American satellite that had deorbited. Over the years, new reports about the Black Knight satellite have piled up, yet they are believed by many to be the result of unverified stories, overly impressionable reporters, and misinterpreted photographs. As NASA astronaut Jerry Ross says, the object and all assumptions about it are simply the results of an error.

Martina Redpath, Senior Support Officer at Armagh Planetarium in Northern Ireland, said The Black Knight is "a jumbled collection of completely unrelated stories". Redpath also claimed that many of the reports associated with the satellite are "unscientific observations" which fueled the Black Knight myth. A possible explanation for the mystery can be found in December 1998, when another space shuttle was sent to the International Space Station (ISS).

During the mission, Colonel Ross and Dr. James Newman tried to install so-called thermal blankets outside the station to reduce heat loss and save energy on the ISS. However, one of the blankets was lost. By the time it was spotted, it was already too far away from the astronauts to be caught. As NASA explains, debris, regardless of size, often floats away from stations during spacewalks. This was also the case in December 1998.

Thus, the object photographed during the 1998 mission known as STS-88, and commonly believed to be the Black Knight satellite, is likely the thermal blanket that Colonel Ross and Dr. Newman lost, according to journalist James Oberg. In an interview that was given in 2014, Colonel Ross also stated that "conspiracy theories are fun for those who work on them, but they are a waste of a valuable mental resource." However, this is also just a theory. No one knows what the mysterious satellite is.

Lunan found that the signal pointed in the direction of Epsilon Boötis, a double star in the constellation Boötes. Whatever the "Black Prince" was, it seemed to be broadcasting an invitation from the people of Epsilon Bootes, an invitation 12,600 years old, according to Lunan.

The latest confirmation came in 1998 when the space shuttle Endeavor was on its maiden STS-88 flight to the space station. It turned out that all the pieces of the history of the "Black Prince" were not involved in it. The name "Black Prince" is so prosaic that it is difficult to figure out when he became associated with the story of the satellite. It sounds unbelievable, but the name could have come from any space country, and is so common that it can be associated with any number of real projects. From 1958 to 1965, the UK launched 22 rockets while developing reentry vehicles. The program was called "The Black Prince". But the "Black Prince" did not put anything into orbit, the second stage ended with a descent, not an ascent. Take the name of the story out of the equation and all the links in the chain fall apart. All events associated with the mysterious satellite of the Earth are well documented at that time, but there is no name "Black Prince".

Nikola Tesla actually picked up a radio signal in 1899, and believed in its cosmic origin. Today we know that Tesla was right. The signal he picked up was from a pulsar, a huge cosmic source of pulsating radio signals. Formally, pulsars were discovered in 1968. Since pulsars were not known at the time of Tesla, a possible assumption was made about the intelligent origin of the source of the undeciphered message.
The Norwegian scientist really accepted the "delayed echo" and the origin of the phenomenon is still unsolved. None of the hypotheses considers the Earth's satellite left by aliens. Although, if such an alien satellite recorded a radio signal and broadcast it 8 seconds later, the effect would be similar.
When Duncan Lunan interpreted the received radio signals as signals from space, he had no idea to connect this phenomenon with the Black Prince or another orbiting satellite of the Earth. Lunan suggested that the effect is related to one of the Lagrange points, point L5. There are two such points: L4 and L5. They are located in the orbit of the moon. One of the points is 60 degrees behind the moon, the other is 60 degrees ahead of the moon, they are stable and show the effect of gravity. Moreover, Lunan realized the unscientific nature of the assumption and his mistake, retracting it later. So, contrary to the popularized story of the "Black Prince", there is no connection either with Epsilon Bootes, or with the mystical satellite of the Earth, or with the date of 12.6 thousand years ago.

Newspaper reports about two orbiting Earth satellites in 1954? Stories spun out of thin air by dodgers to support the sale of UFO books. The US Air Force officer in question was a person who saw UFOs, but did not in any way express the idea of ​​\u200b\u200bmystical satellites of the Earth. No connection to the Black Prince in question.
The most interesting part of the story happened in 1960 when the Discoverer satellites were launched. Secretary of the Air Force Dudley Sharp, told the press that this new mystical object was the second casing from the Discoverer VIII, a doppelgänger of the one previously discovered. Although the entire Discoverer program was military, the launches and results were published in newspapers and contained truthful information, which became clear after secrecy was removed. The Corona chamber and its casing were indeed lost from the Discoverer VIII, as the newspapers reported in 1960. Their unusual orbits were also correctly described.
What did Gordon Cooper see from Mercury 9, confirmed by all radar operators? According to Cooper himself, who died in 2004, nothing at all. But there is no mistake that Gordon Cooper reported on the discovery of UFOs more than once when he was a pilot. He was sure he saw a whole fleet of UFOs above him when he was based in Germany, although no one else reported it. But Cooper is also sure that the report attributed to him about the greenish "Black Prince" seen from Mercury 9 in 1963 is completely fabricated. He posted all the records of the flight, including his own originals, confirming the absence of such a report.
The story of Cooper's message is mentioned in almost all books about UFOs and the Black Prince. But there is no such record in NASA documents, not in the reports of radar operators or other sources, and is a pure fiction of modern writers.
What does the flight STS-88 of the Endavor spacecraft and the stunning photographs of the spacecraft leave us with? There are many inaccuracies in this part of the story. First of all, the space shuttle is always in equatorial orbit, as is the International Space Station. An object moving in a polar orbit has a speed of tens of thousands of kilometers per hour. Too fast to get noticed and incredibly fast to get some high quality photos. During one of the astronauts' spacewalks, a thermal blanket was lost. One side is silver, the other side is black. It slowly moved away, taking on bizarre shapes, and several photographs were taken. Without knowing the origin of the object, you can name anything. But, fortunately for the astronauts and unfortunately for the mysterious story, it was not an alien satellite.
The author had a lot of fun doing this story. Studied many previously unfamiliar historical and astronomical facts. It would be wrong to simply accept the story of the "Black Prince" on faith. The author would not have had so much anxiety and so many interesting discoveries. Worse, I would have made a logical error by cramming into my understanding an incredible story about an alien satellite in Earth orbit. Neither the legends nor the revelations have any value. Really rewards just learning the facts.

Back in Soviet times, when I was studying at the "alma mater", among us students there was talk about the presence in the near-Earth orbit of the Earth's satellite called the Black Prince, whose identity was not established. The material below is a compilation of what was found. I can't say anything about S. Slayton's observations, because there is no factual information. How close to the truth is the assumption about the connection between the effect of the appearance of reflected radio signals and the likely presence of an unidentified object in near-Earth orbit - there is no evidence either. The selection turned out in the form of a chronology of events and a listing of references, one way or another associated with the "Black Prince".

The first message about the "Black Prince" appeared in one of the American media in 1958. It reported that an amateur astronomer had discovered an unidentified object in the near outer space of the planet. His name was S. Slayton, he used a 20-inch telescope and made observations of the lunar disk, during which he managed to fix the mysterious object.

Then the astronomer considered the object artificial, since the trajectory of its movement was in a straight line and it disappeared from sight when it reached the edge of the moon's disk. Slayton was surprised by the speed with which the object moved - it was unthinkable! The astronomer attributed the disappearance of the object to its black color, as it became invisible to the human eye against the background of a dark sky. Then Slayton made an approximate calculation of the elements of the object's orbit and was able to determine the next time when the Black Prince would again become available for observation.
His calculations were confirmed and he was again able to see the object through the telescope, after which he immediately made a statement to the media, where he announced his discovery.

The "Black Prince" moved along an elliptical trajectory, the flight altitude was about 2 thousand km on the Earth's surface, and the object itself had a diameter of just over 10 meters. After Slayton's announcement, military representatives immediately requested data on the object's orbit and began their own research. After numerous attempts, they failed to identify the "Black Prince", a statement was sent to the media that amateur astronomer Slayton, apparently, recorded an ordinary meteorite that flew near the moon.
But Slayton did not give up: convinced that he saw a real object, he made one more calculation, setting the next moment when the object would pass over the lunar disk. Having invited representatives of the media, he began a new session of observing the object. All the journalists who were present at the session witnessed the reality of this object, and after that, for a long time, the Black Prince became No. 1 news in many world newspapers and magazines.

The mysterious object was first called the “Black Prince” by the Soviet science fiction writer A.P. Kazantsev, suggesting that it was an “unaccounted for” satellite that revolves around our planet. The writer believed that the object could be a satellite of an alien civilization, that is, an ordinary UFO. This version was taken quite seriously among scientists and enthusiasts from all over the world began to study the object. At the same time, the radar stations of the USA and the USSR continued their attempts to detect this object, but they all ended in failure. And amateur astronomers continued to report more and more cases of observation of the "Black Prince", and now it was recorded not only against the background of the Moon, but also of the Sun. A new wave of interest in the mysterious object was revived 20 years later, during the testing of new ultra-sensitive equipment by Gorky radio physicists.
During the adjustment period of the equipment, they recorded some unknown object that had a temperature of over 200 degrees Celsius. At the time, they thought this object was some kind of secret satellite. After continuing their observations, the Gorky people soon learned that the "Black Prince" was not fixed using conventional radar equipment. They prepared a report for a symposium on extraterrestrial civilizations, which was to be held in December 1981.

However, the report was never included in the program of the symposium for censorship reasons of that time. During the symposium, on the sidelines, the version was seriously discussed that the USSR military, with the help of an advanced locator, was still able to detect the Black Prince. In addition, it was reported at the symposium that a mysterious body near the Moon reflects radio signals from the Earth. Then a group of scientists who participated in the symposium and studied this object, guessed that we were talking about the "Black Prince".

10 years later, US military specialist T. Erickson suggested that the surface of the "Black Prince" contains a special coating based on graphite, and for this reason it reflects radio waves. Approximately a year later, the US communications satellite was launched into an orbit similar to that of the Black Prince and after a while simply disappeared from the field of view of radars. On the sidelines, they began to seriously discuss the possibility of a collision of this satellite with a mysterious object in space.

Since the middle of the last century, several attempts have been made to decipher messages from this possible alien satellite. For the first time, an astronomer from Scotland, D. Lunen, took up the decoding. Having arranged the signals in the coordinate system, he directed the serial numbers of the signals along the vertical axis, and the delay in seconds along the horizontal. The picture that the astronomer saw struck him to the point of impossibility - he saw the constellation Bootes in front of him.
But there was one more nuance - all the stars were slightly shifted in the image, they had such a position 10,000 years ago. Among other things, the star Epsilon was clearly not in the place where it is now. According to Lunen, it was the shift of the star that indicated the place from which the Black Prince had arrived. But all attempts to understand what the "Black Prince" is and where he really came from ended in failure ...

This strange story began for me in deep childhood. I remember how now - I'm sitting in a room, reading A.P. Kazantsev's novel "The Faetians". In addition to other literary delights, there is one curious episode in particular in the novel.

In high Earth orbit, cosmonauts (naturally, Soviet ones! The novel itself was written in 1972, and of course, the fact of our superiority in space was emphasized more than once in Faeti) explore some mysterious celestial body - an object called the Black Prince ”(“ state of emergency").

After an external acquaintance, the astronaut penetrates inside the object and removes several artifacts of the correct geometric shape. As it later turns out, aliens ... "An interesting plot move!" I thought. However, the author's notion here was minimal ...

Because in 1970 this object was blown up in orbit so that no one else (in those years - only Soviet cosmonauts) would be on board the "Black Prince" ... The age of the "space" mummy was determined by the radiological method - about 10,000 years. The artifacts studied in laboratories on Earth were very similar to the products of the masters of Ancient Egypt, but made at a higher technological level ... What was the “Black Prince”? The tomb of the great pharaoh, launched into a very high orbit millennia ago? Then the absence of portholes is understandable. But what is the hatch for? It was the development of an apparatus designed to fly to the moon, at a distance of up to 400,000 km from the Earth. It turns out that "A-4" could easily "visit" the "Black Prince". And the crew... also, apparently, could be on board, however, for conspiracy, the astronauts would have to fly in complete silence (not among themselves, of course, but without radio communication with the Earth).

Difficult, but also feasible, especially since a special radio code could be used in dialogues with the Earth. "Apollo" actively increased the height of its orbit, made maneuvers. Jet engines have already been used by the Americans during spacewalks. Another nuance - it turns out that the A-4 became the first ship of the new series (of the Apollo type), on which astronauts flew - a full crew - three people. And immediately with an unusual task: to catch up with unknown things in space and explore it is not clear how ... Boldly? Undoubtedly.

But here's a stubborn fact: on December 21, 1968, in order to overtake the USSR, the United States launches the Apollo 8 spacecraft to fly around the moon, according to the official version, only the second ship of the "lunar" series with a crew! In addition to small engines of orientation and maneuvering, with a single sustainer (the power of which allows the ship to return to Earth) engine! If the engine failed, the three astronauts would forever remain in the orbit of the Moon or get lost in the depths of the Universe...
