Unfortunately, parking a bike is not always such an easy task. You have to either raise it higher so that the bike lock reaches some railing or drainpipe, or vice versa, tie it in such a way that the bike can only wait for its owner in a horizontal position. Of course, this is inconvenient. It is much better when there is a specialized bike parking. Especially one on which it is not scary to leave an expensive “bike” without fear that it will be stolen, that is, located in a conspicuous place, next to a security post or under the supervision of video cameras.

European-standard bike parking allows you to conveniently and securely place 12 bicycles of any type, it is easy to manufacture and, thanks to the use of 40–50 mm tubes, it is vandal-resistant. The capacity of the bike rack is easily increased by adding additional sections.

  • When located along the wall, the distance to the bike rack should not be less than 50 cm, this will allow you to use it as efficiently as possible;
  • For added security, the bike rack must be securely attached to the ground;
  • It is recommended to place the bike rack within the reach of CCTV cameras or security personnel.

Periodically watching in RuNet in general and on in particular discussions of bicycle parking designs, the author wants to help people not to repeat the search that has been passed over many decades and proven in practice, but to give them the opportunity to build on already developed and proven solutions. For this purpose, an analysis of the English-language recommendations was made, summarized in this compilation.


Of course, blind copying will not bring success - but let's hope that familiarity with existing developments will help, at least, not to step on other people's rakes. And the main thing is to do something in reality. I would like all buildings to have several bike racks, conveniently located near the main entrances for visitors and clients.

Well, the disclaimer: the proposal to use bicycle parking in our reality of movement towards a civilized society involves the use of not a military fancy device, but a relatively cheap one, which is not (so) a pity.


For what

Every cycling trip has at its beginning and at the end the need for a safe and secure place to park your bike. Fear of bike theft is one of the biggest deterrents for people to bike to their destination. By providing secure and appropriate bike parking, the company communicates to people that they and their bikes are welcome.

The lack of secure parking space deters many people from using their bikes as a means of transport. Leaving the bike unattended even for a short time can result in damage or theft. Bicycle parking that is poorly designed or installed incorrectly can be frustrating for cyclists and property owners.

Cyclists, like car enthusiasts, are looking for convenient and secure parking spaces near their places of residence. Often cyclists have little choice and simply attach their bikes to nearby fixed objects. As anyone who has passed bikes affixed to signs, railings/fences, and parking meters on a busy downtown sidewalk knows, this is not ideal. This unstructured approach to bike parking creates inconvenience for pedestrians and contributes to the feeling that bikes are not needed. Well-designed, attractive and well-placed car parks make it clear that bicycles are an important part of the transportation system.

There are two types of bike parking: long-term and short-term. Short-Term Parking typically used for two hours or less by clients or guests, and should be placed as close to the building's main entrance as possible. Long-Term Parking typically used by workers, transit users or residents and must have a high level of security and weather protection. Long-term parking should be located indoors, in a garage or in a fenced area.

The purpose of this article is to assist in the selection and installation of suitable bike racks for short-term off-premises parking (long-term parking). Parking lots are for regular upright single bikes. The cyclist is expected to use a U-shaped hard lock, or a cable lock, or a combination of the two. We will discuss three main components:

Design

Rack

Definition: A rack is a part of a bike rack that supports one bike.

The rack should:

  • Support the bike in an upright position by its frame in two places.
  • Protect the bicycle wheel from turning out, preventing it from tipping over.
  • Allow the frame and one or both wheels to be attached.
  • Support bikes without a diamond frame with a horizontal top tube (e.g. mixte frame).
  • Allow front parking: The U-lock should secure the front wheel and down tube of the upright bike.
  • Allow Rear Parking: The U-lock should secure the rear wheel and seat tube of the upright bike.

The rack should be made of materials strong enough to withstand being cut or detached with common hand tools - especially one that can be tucked away in a backpack. These tools include bolt cutters, pipe cutters, wrenches and pry bars. Bicycle racks must be securely fastened.

(Note that the U-shaped lock is attached to the bicycle frame when riding. The chain - especially powerful sizes - is transported by bikers on their own hips. Both have different protection groups - respectively, thickness and weight. The cable is already so well known to our readers.)

The uprights do not have sharp edges, seams, or parts that can be dangerous or become unsightly over time. A properly made rack will not damage the bike frame. The inverted U design will complement most outdoor and architectural complexes, providing bike parking without taking up space on the sidewalk or in front of the building. Because the U-pillars are individual free-standing units, there is flexibility in the number and placement of the U-pillars.

When comparing prices, take into account the material, finish quality, and rack capacity. Rectangular tubes, being only slightly more expensive than round ones, are more reliable because they resist cutting. Remember that short-term parking stands can serve as long-term parking when installed indoors, in a fenced area, or in other secure locations.

2. Racks that are difficult to use. Cyclists should be able to fasten quickly and easily.

Combs, toasters, schoolyards, and other wheel-bending racks that do not provide support for the bike frame are not recommended.

Wave: One stanchion element is a vertical segment of the stanchion. Wave-style parking lots are not recommended. Cyclists typically use "wave" parking as if it were a single inverted U. This limits the actual parking capacity to two bikes, regardless of potential or advertised capacity. Bicycles parked perpendicular to wave parking (as intended by the manufacturer) are not supported in two places and are more likely to fall in it. The advertised capacity of wave parking is usually much larger than the practical capacity.

This rack can be easily cut with standard bolt cutters, and can also be easily disassembled. She's not reliable.

Bicycle parking

Definition: bike rack - one or more racks, combined on any common base or assembled in a regular row and attached to a common mounting surface.

Parking should consist of a grouping of racks. The uprights may be attached to a single base or remain separate elements mounted within close proximity to each other. The posts must not easily separate from the base of the parking lot or easily separate from the mounting surface. The base must be secured in such a way that it cannot be stolen along with the bikes attached to it - vandal-resistant connectors can be used to attach the base to the surface. An exception is when the parking lot is so large that it cannot be easily moved or lifted with bikes attached.

Parking should provide easy, independent access to bicycles. Inverted-U racks in a row should be spaced 30" apart. This gives enough room to attach two bikes to each rack. Generally, the height of the handlebar and saddle will allow two bikes to be lined up if one of them is turned around. If they interfere with each other, the bikes can be placed slightly offset from each other as shown in the illustration.

If the racks are set too close together, it becomes difficult to attach two bikes to the same element. Squeezing bikes into place and attaching the lock is too inconvenient and too long, cyclists will look for another place to park or use one rack per bike and cut the design parking capacity in half.

An empty parking lot should not pose a threat to visually impaired pedestrians.

Distances

Rack lines are separated by walkways. The passage is measured between the extreme points of the bicycle tires through the space between the uprights. The minimum width of the passage must be 48 inches. This will provide enough space for one person to walk and roll the bike. In high traffic areas where multiple users leave or pick up bikes at the same time, such as in a college classroom, a minimum aisle width of 72 inches is recommended.

  1. Bicycle parking spaces must be at least two (2) by six (6) feet per bike. The vertical clearance must be at least 78 inches.
  2. Behind the bike parking area, a walkway must be at least five (5) feet wide to allow maneuvering.
  3. Adequate access clearance of at least 24 inches should be provided for each parked bicycle. This access can be shared by neighboring bikes. Racks should be installed at least 24 inches from any obstruction.

Large parking areas with a high turnover rate should have more than one entrance. This will help facilitate the arrival and departure of cyclists and pedestrians.

If possible, the parking area should be protected starting from the pillars. Parking lots along the walls of buildings can be covered with a canopy. Although cyclists are exposed to the sun, rain and snow while on the road, covering the parking area makes it more comfortable to park, strap on the bike and load/unload luggage. The canopy will also help keep the bike dry, especially the saddle.

The practices recommended above are not meant to stifle creativity. There are plenty of creative 3D bike racks out there that work really well. Whether the rack is a hanger, helix, or other configuration, it is critical that the design supports the bike in two places and allows it to be securely fastened.

Creative designs must carefully balance form and function. For example, the one shown below is likely to have less effective capacity than it first appears because one or more racks are not available. Likewise, the racks shown below must be carefully constructed and maintained to prevent any slack in the connections between the hanger and the rack itself - such slack could compromise the safety of bikes attached to the rack. In addition, there must be a distance of at least 30" between the "coat hanger-hanger" elements.

Bicycle parking is a special design that accommodates from several to dozens of bikes. There are several common options for outdoor bicycle parking facilities:

  • compartment;
  • "horizontal bars";
  • longitudinal.

The first option is much more common than the other two. The compartment parking is a one-piece structure with transverse pipes. The front wheels of bicycles are inserted into the space between them, while the wheel is attached to the pipes with an anti-theft lock. The dimensions of the compartments may be the same throughout the structure, or they may vary. This depends on the manufacturer. Road and road bikes tend to fit in narrow bays, MTBs with wide tires will need wider bays.

The design has considerable weight, it is problematic to move it, and it is generally impossible to drag it away. However, installers insure and fix the parking lot to the asphalt or walls, and rightly so.

The second type of bike racks are U-shaped pipes standing in a row. Outwardly, they resemble horizontal bars, hence the name. High "horizontal bars" will allow you to lean the bike against them with a frame, the mini version is only suitable for fastening a wheel or laying a bicycle horizontally.

Longitudinal bicycle parking is the same compartment design, rotated 90 degrees. The shape resembles a rack, in the "floors" of which the bike is placed in a horizontal position. It will not be possible to make many such sections, a maximum of three, since it is simply unrealistic to drag the bike high up.

Compartment parking is convenient because it does not take up much space, it can accommodate up to 15 bicycles. The disadvantages include the inconvenience of attaching only the front wheel and the unsteadiness of the bike if it does not have a footrest.

The horizontal bar is more convenient in terms of mounting, but requires more installation work. The full-size version is rare, and its “undersized” counterpart is, in fact, the same compartment parking.

Longitudinal structures take up a lot of space; to organize a spacious parking lot, you will have to install 5-6 such showcases. On the other hand, the bike does not glow in front of the thieves, but lies securely.

Exquisite design solutions

Standard modifications may seem boring and do not fit into the architecture of the city. Here the inventors of "beauty and style" come to the rescue. The fantasy of designers can result in any form, but we will list only some non-standard options:

  • Ferris wheel;
  • tubercle;
  • fruit;
  • spiral;
  • guard bicycles.

The Ferris wheel is a suspended parking lot that every passer-by will notice. Its capacity, however, is small, up to six large. Free space may be at the top, but it's not scary: just turn the wheel, hang and secure the bike. Such parking is unlikely to be intended for everyone; most likely, it will be put up for employees of some organization. It is not yet possible to see it in our country, let's just admire it in the picture.

Fruit is a beautiful, roomy and heavy construction. Bicycles set up around the center will bring a smile and admiration. It can be mounted with both a wheel and a frame. The different widths of the compartments will not only help to hook any type of bike, but also add naturalness to the fruit itself. For our cities, this option is incomparable, we are waiting!

DIY bike parking

Self-handled bicycle parking is relevant in the country and in the countryside, where conventional parking has not yet reached. Although, their absence may also be within the city, so the question of how to build a bicycle parking complex without any special costs is very relevant. This plan can be implemented in several ways:

  • weld the compartment structure;
  • make from car tires;
  • dig U-shaped pipes.

Welding a metal frame requires precision so that the load-bearing elements do not warp. To protect the metal, you need to paint the structure with moisture-resistant paint. You should not save on the length of the compartments - let the bike fit into the parking lot with both wheels.

Give a second life to tires? Easily. We cut them in half, and then we knock together the halves with a piece of wood along one edge. We fix the resulting parking to a wall or a hard surface on the ground so that they do not drag it away. Another way to create a parking lot from tires is to dig them entirely into the ground, as flower growers do to create mini-fences. When dug in, pour a layer of concrete on top.

Cycling is becoming more and more popular in Krasnoyarsk, even the almost complete lack of infrastructure does not interfere with this. Here, near the Razdolie store on Mira Avenue, the bike parking is not very beautiful, but it is high and with wide sections, you can completely roll at least one wheel there and you can already fasten the bike normally.
