The almighty and terrible Baron Shabbat, the cruel lord of the cemeteries, reigns supreme here. But it is not sorcerers and priests who oppose him, but honesty and courage, faithful friendship and ardent love ...

10th place "Leviathan"

In our selection there is a place for all genres, including detective stories. One of the earliest books by Boris Akunin, published back in 1998, is part of a series of novels about the adventures of Erast Fandorin. Just imagine: the end of the 19th century, a huge Leviathan liner going to India, and on board is a ruthless killer, on whose conscience there is more than one death. The circle of suspects has been narrowed down to a few characters, but, nevertheless, it will not be so easy for the young diplomat Fandorin to unravel the criminal plot. The denouement of the story is unexpected and can surprise even experienced detective fans. In addition to the details of the ship's life of first-class passengers and the twists and turns of the plot intrigue, Akunin colorfully depicts the differences between Western and oriental cultures... The sea in this novel not only restricts the characters in movement, but also hides the evidence.

9th place "Black Corsair"

Emilio Salgari and his adventure novel "The Black Corsair" occupy the penultimate position in the ranking. Fans of the movie "Pirates of the Caribbean" will surely enjoy this novel: Tortuga, brave pirates, sweet revenge and deadly battles. Emilio Roccanera, aka Black Corsair, dreams of revenge on the governor for the murder of his brothers. His friends, Francois Olone and the famous pirate Henry Morgan, come to the aid of the brave sea wolf. Emilio Salgari is considered a classic of Italian literature, he has written more than 200 adventure novels and short stories - he is something like the Italian Alexander Dumas, but writing about adventures at sea. Fatal love, noble impulses, storms and storms - this book has everything to make the evening stop boring. Fans of Captain Blood's Odyssey should love it.

8th place "Ship of Fools"

On this line of our collection is another book, which takes place on a ship. But, unlike the previous ones, this is not an adventure or a detective story. The novel by Catherine Ann Porter, a wonderful American writer, is quite realistic and is a philosophical drama about how and why the world came to fascism. On board an ocean liner sailing from Mexico to Germany, people of different destinies gathered, rich and poor, evil and kind, tolerant and not so - everyone has their own secrets and skeletons in the closet. A story unfolds before the reader about how, willy-nilly, people have to coexist with each other and what a complex creature a person is. The novel takes place in 1931, at the height of the global crisis, and the ship itself is humanity in miniature with all its contradictions. Despite the depth of its content, "Ship of Fools" is easy to read and interesting.

7th place "Beach"

Alex Garland's novel, in fact, has little in common with the famous film adaptation with Leonardo DiCaprio in the title role - everything in the book is much more subtle, serious and deeper. The main character finds himself on a beautiful Thai beach, where nature and the sea of fantastic beauty hide terrible secrets human soul. The calm and relaxed book gradually draws in the reader, and then suddenly turns into a gripping and even ominous story. The search for Paradise on earth is not crowned with success, but leads to an understanding of oneself and human psychology in general. The life of a closed commune, daily and sometimes painful obtaining food, squabbles and mutual irritation - paradise turns out to be just that, and the hero has to overcome his infantilism and finally take off his rose-colored glasses. A gripping story that never lets go until the very last page.

6th place "Sea, sea"

The English writer Iris Murdoch, alas, is not very well known in our country, but her services to world literature are not diminishing for this. The novel "Sea, Sea" depicts the life of a famous director, playwright and actor who suddenly decided to retire and become a hermit. He understands his hermitism somewhat differently than most people, and settles in a luxurious villa on the seashore. Having left the stage, the hero finds himself a new hobby - cooking, and, plunging headlong into the creation of dishes, begins to delve into himself and his own life along the way, and these reflections lead him to different and not always pleasant conclusions. In this novel, the sea is not just the background of the hero's life, but his friend, confidant, almost animated in the mind of the protagonist. Iris Murdoch won the Booker Prize in 1978 for Sea, Sea.

5th place "Tsushima"

Marine writer Alexei Novikov-Priboy wrote a wonderful novel chronicling one of the greatest naval battles in history. The book was created over the years and not only on the basis of memoir evidence and archival data: the author himself participated in the Tsushima battle, was captured by the Japanese, but managed to survive and write an excellent book. Military history chronicles paint an epic picture of the battle, covering all its possible aspects and shades. A gallery of the characters of sailors, officers, admirals - all participants in the bloody battle, in which, largely through the fault of the command, two Pacific squadrons were defeated - sweeps before the readers. The main theme of the novel is the feat of Russian sailors, who managed to preserve honor and dignity in an unequal battle. A unique work that can captivate both fans of action-packed prose and fans of the historical genre.

4th place "Sunken Treasures"

Sunken Treasures stands out from the rest of the collection - it is not fiction, but travel notes. But, you must admit, written by Jacques-Yves Cousteau is worth reading. The crew of the famous research vessel "Calypso" led by the famous Frenchman sets off in search of the sunken Spanish ship that crashed on the Silver Bank coral reefs. The book describes day after day the everyday life of the expedition, but not only: the reader has to learn a lot about the history of the New World, about what the ship Nuestra Senora de la Concepcion is so interesting for, how Spain conquered the seas and much, much more. Easily and naturally, the author plunges the reader into the world of history and the depths of the sea, keeping many mysteries and secrets.

3rd place "Sea-ocean"

Another Italian author on our list is Alessandro Baricco with the novel Sea-Ocean. In the Almeier tavern on the seashore, there are several completely different people who do not know each other: the professor who compiles the Encyclopedia of Limits, the artist who conceived an incredible picture, a girl with a broken heart ... Everyone is looking for support, hints, peace by the sea - and everyone finds what fate has prepared for him. The sea absorbs their passions, worries and sorrows, and gives hope for the best. Non-trivial images, florid descriptions, complex characters and interweaving of destinies - this wonderful, deep and poetic novel is rightfully considered the best in Barikko's work. For the book "Sea-Ocean" the writer received the prestigious Italian awards "Viareggio" and "Palazzo al Bosco".

2nd place "Island on the Eve"

After the sensational novels "The Name of the Rose" and "Foucault's Pendulum," Umberto Eco took up sea adventures. The time of action is the 17th century, and the plot itself is a bit like "Robinson Crusoe", only in this novel the hero finds himself alone not on an island, but on a ship anchored in the Pacific Ocean. There was no one left on the ship, the crew died in a battle with the natives, and the young nobleman Robert de la Grieve will have to master his own imagination. A solitary stay on the ship begins to dominate him, the subconsciousness throws him more and more fears and doubts - the hero either plunges into these games of the mind, then again emerges to the surface. True to himself, Umberto Eco saturates the narrative not only with action scenes, but also with philosophical reasoning, historical details, numerous quotes and literary references. Reading this book is not the easiest thing to do, but it's worth it.

1st place "Islands in the ocean"

If we do without Ernest Hemingway's book in our selection, then it was not worth it, honestly, to start this whole rating. The creator, without exaggeration, of the greatest story "The Old Man and the Sea", at the end of his life, wrote the novel "Islands in the Ocean". This work was not completed by the author, and therefore inferior in popularity to other books by Hemingway. At the center of the narrative is the story of the melancholic artist Thomas Hudson and his family. Hemingway has always been interested in dramas of strong characters, sincerely and honestly he describes his hero, his moral choice and dedication. "He believed that happiness is the most wonderful thing in the world, and for those who know how to be happy, it can be as deep as sadness" - Hemingway wrote simply, but in every chapter, in every paragraph, in every line of it books seem to contain the wisdom of the ages.

The nautical theme is one of the main themes in the adventure genre. Something seems to be a pure invention of the author, but something is based on real events ... Their topics are extremely wide:

  • sea monsters;
  • pirates;
  • marine research expeditions;
  • people trapped on isolated islands in the ocean;
  • adventures of fearless sea captains and others.

One of characteristic features nautical novels is the presence in the plot of the conflict ... This conflict can occur at different levels: within a small team (on a ship), a confrontation between two ships, as well as a collision with the sea element, which a person dared to conquer.

An important component literary works, the background of which is the sea, is the presence of a dramatic line. And it is precisely among the dramatically unfolding events that the characters of those who dare to resist the sea element are formed.

Thus, the heroes acquire a certain charm of courage and courage, and their adventures - a kind of romantic halo. This is what attracts people to marine adventure literature, this genre will always be in demand.

The works of the marine theme are very diverse and are not limited to books about pirates. Many aspects of the life of people associated with the sea will be touched upon here: hard work of sailors, romance of pioneers, whale hunting, exploration of the polar regions, heroism and villainy of sea robbers and their opponents as well as many other questions.

The best works in the genre of sea adventures

The fiction of the marine theme originated a very long time ago, back in ancient times. Even then, the Greeks were intensively exploring the waters of the Mediterranean. But its true birth belongs to the New Age, when Europeans dared to go out into the open ocean.

Since then, the genre of nautical adventure has become more diverse and ramified. ... There are many wonderful works on this topic, which have long become imperishable classics.

Emil. Good octopus

Tomi Ungerer

Half a century ago, this book was presented to children by the famous artist, winner of the Anderson Prize, creator of the well-known boa constrictor Kriktor and no less popular piglets Hryullops, Tomi Ungerer. His works leave no one indifferent. They inspire both adults and children, and excite the imagination.

Julia Donaldson

The book about the underwater world from the British creators of the world bestseller about Gruffalo tells incredible stories of the dreamer-sprat (it turns out, there is such a fish - sprat!) In verse. An excellent translation by Maria Boroditskaya, as well as drawings by Axel Scheffler with his signature, perfectly recognizable colorful style, will make you and your children reopen this book more than once, and maybe even learn it by heart.

Many different inhabitants study at the marine school, and only one of them is always late because of some kind of adventure, in which only she believes. But suddenly she really gets into trouble, and for some reason completely unfamiliar fish and animals come to her aid. Why? The sea is also full of rumors. No less sea book by the same authors - "The Snail and the Whale" - can serve as an excellent addition to reading with children at sea.

Little Cod Adventures

Ulaf Cusheron

For some reason, children's writers and artists love to devote their books and cartoons to marine life. Probably because this world is almost unknown to us, and also because they are mysterious and silent.

The publishing house "Compass Guide" some time ago, for the first time in the last half century, republished a book by a Norwegian writer about the adventures of an inquisitive, like all children, a fry of cod named Trond. In addition to an interesting fairy tale plot, this small encyclopedia contains a lot of popular science facts about the underwater world. It will help adults answer many of the children's "why" that arise when a child finds himself in an unfamiliar environment - at sea. How fish gills and swim bladders are arranged, why they do not drown, and a dolphin or a whale can drown, what a starfish or a stingray feed on, how different fish breed, seahorses and corals - everything is here.

How I became a traveler

Fedor Konyukhov

The sea for children is associated not only with fish and the underwater world, but also with ships. And this means - with travel, pirates and exciting adventures. In this small in volume, but very interesting and instructive book, a famous traveler, conqueror of seas and oceans, as well as mountain peaks and ice, Fyodor Konyukhov tells children about his incredible wanderings and why he chose this path. As a 15-year-old, he single-handedly crossed the Sea of Azov on the oars, and a little later, at 50, the whole Atlantic Ocean, conquered all the highest mountain peaks. He encountered whales, pirates and polar bears. And the most interesting thing is that all this is not the inventions of writers and not at all fairy tales, but the pure truth!

“A traveler should cherish all our beautiful Earth in his heart with care and love,” he instructs future sailors and rock climbers.

The picture book, without a single word, conveys all the shades of emotions and experiences of a child playing with the sea element. The author of the illustrations, a young Korean artist Suzie Lee, has received many honorary international awards for this book.

The masterful combination of black and white drawings of a girl and seagulls on one page and the azure blue sea opposite is mesmerizing. Children, like in a mirror, look at the reflection in the sea wave of the emotions of a girl who is teasing, frolicking, frightened, then playing tenderly with her.

Hello my brother Bzou!

Evgeny Rudashevsky

The debut story of the writer and journalist Yevgeny Rudashevsky, even in the manuscript, was awarded the Kniguru prize and brought the author the main prize. This is a documentary story about the friendship between a boy and a dolphin on the eve of the war. In the yard in 1980, 17-year-old Amza, together with his older brother, rescues a dolphin that has washed ashore and gradually becomes his friend.

Against the background - the rough life and customs of the Abkhaz village, whose inhabitants plow the land for centuries, go to the sea and, frankly, do not quite understand the unusual friendship of the boy with the dolphin. Soon Amze should turn 18, which means that he is waiting for a military call, which promises the hero something more terrible than separation from a friend that occupies all his thoughts. Most interestingly, there is practically no war in the book. Rudashevsky's heroes do not really know what it is, but that is why their confusion and timidity look even more piercing. The feeling of the senselessness of the impending catastrophe and the presentiment of separation from the usual way of life is perhaps the main motive that Rudashevsky managed to convey.

"Vasa" goes to sea!

Mats Val

If you have been to Stockholm, you have probably visited the Vasa Museum - a ship of the early seventeenth century from the time of the Swedish king Gustav II Adolf, which was supposed to become the largest warship in the world, but sank without sailing even 20 minutes. It did not sink forever, but it was discovered and raised to the surface only in 1961.

"Vasa" is not just a historical Swedish attraction, but also an important witness of the era, because it has almost entirely preserved all the decoration and equipment. Therefore, the writer Mats Val has two stories: first, a fictional one - a story about how Vasa was built, and then a documentary story - a detailed story about its decks, holds, which adorned its magnificent wooden sculptures. Of particular value here are the drawings by Sven Nordqvist, an artist familiar to everyone from stories about Petson and Findus and known for his attention to detail: not a single detail escapes his gaze.
