Do-it-yourself faucet repair in the kitchen: detailed instructions. How to disassemble and repair a single-lever faucet How to fix a ball valve in the kitchen

In the kitchen, the faucet is used much more actively than in the bathroom, so it fails much more often. In rare cases, the only solution to a problem is to buy a new appliance and invite a plumber, in the rest you can handle it yourself. Having decided to repair the faucet in the kitchen with your own hands, you will save on the services of a specialist and gain important experience. You just need to arm yourself with theory and tools.

Repair of a faucet in the kitchen - when and why is it necessary

Your kitchen faucet needs repair if you experience the following "symptoms":

  • Leakage from under the nut at the place where the water is poured out, from under the handle (lever) or mixer taps in working order.
  • The correct movement of the lever or valves is disturbed (they stick, scroll, do not lock in the desired position, etc.).
  • With normal water pressure in the system, the jet is not powerful enough.
  • Water drips from a closed faucet.

Please note: the detected problem must be solved as quickly as possible! This will extend the life of the mixer and protect yourself and your neighbors from flooding, saving money, time and nerves.

The most common problem is a leaky faucet. And here you need to know the "enemy" not only in person, but also from the inside. It's about mixers.

Features of the device of the main types of kitchen faucets

Cool things like thermostatic and touchless faucets are good for bathrooms. In the kitchen, more practical models are fighting for a place in the sun - traditional two-valve and single-lever. Common elements for them are: body, spout (spout), aerator, sealing gaskets. Otherwise, they differ significantly.

The device of two-valve cranes

Familiar to the eye taps with two valves are arranged quite simply. Under the flywheel, which you turn during the operation of the structure, there is a crane box - its locking element. Below is a device of such a kitchen faucet in pictures.

Boxes in a two-valve mixer (in section)

In products where several turns of the flywheel are required to supply or shut off water, worm axle boxes are installed. Their work is based on rotational-translational movements. The more you unscrew the valve, the more the axle box gasket will move away from the so-called "saddle". The consequence of this is the flow of water into the internal cavity of the mixer, and then into its spout (spout).

Worm-driven faucet for mixer

In models where only half a turn is enough to supply water, axle boxes with ceramic plates are installed. When the faucet is opened, the holes in them coincide, and water flows into the spout.

Crane boxes with ceramic plates

The cost of faucets is low, they are always available in plumbing stores, and their replacement is extremely simple.

The device and types of single-lever mixers

More modern and practical are faucet models with one handle (lever) that regulates pressure and temperature. Mixing of water in them is carried out in a hollow ball with three holes or in a special cartridge.

The mixing element in ball models has three holes, two of which are inlet - designed to enter this miniature container of hot and cold water, and one outlet - to supply water of a given temperature to the sink.

Ball mixer device

The ball itself is located on two "saddles" of rubber. Its displacement relative to them, carried out when the lever moves, and allows you to adjust the pressure, the temperature of the poured water. From above, the ball is fixed with a sealing cuff and a lock nut.

Schematic arrangement of a spherical model of a kitchen faucet

The principle of operation of a mixer with a cartridge that replaces the ball is similar. At the same time, their internal structure is fundamentally different. All the same three functional holes are available, but inside the cartridge there is not a cavity, but special discs made of cermet. Due to their displacement relative to each other and the degree of overlap of the supply holes, when the lever is turned, the water supply is adjusted.

Replaceable ceramic cartridges

The faucet in the kitchen is leaking - how to fix it yourself

To repair a kitchen faucet you will need:

  • knife with a sharp end;
  • hex and adjustable wrench;
  • screwdrivers;
  • a new cartridge, a crane box, a rubber gasket, etc. - depends on which part you will be changing;
  • WD40 is a technical aerosol that will come in handy if the parts are “sticky” to each other. However, you can get by with the traditional tapping of a hammer on a screwdriver, but there is a high risk of damage to the mixer.

Regardless of which faucet you have installed, before starting repairs, you must turn off the water supply in the system and drain its remnants into a sink or a separate container. To do this, just open the tap. Then you can begin to repair it, taking into account the design features.

To repair a single-lever faucet, you will need a hex wrench

Single lever kitchen faucet repair

The main principles of repair are the sequence of actions and accuracy.

  1. Using a thin screwdriver or a knife, pry and remove the decorative cap on the faucet body.
  2. In the resulting hole, you will see a screw connecting the lever and the adjusting rod. Unscrew it with a hex wrench.
  3. Remove the lever from the body and unscrew the decorative cover. This can be done even by hand, if the parts are not stuck to each other.

Removing the decorative cover

  1. A locking (clamping) nut will be located under it. Carefully unscrew it with an adjustable wrench or by tapping a screwdriver with a hammer.
  2. If you disassemble the ball mixer, you will see a sealing cuff under the nut. Inspect it for dirt, deformations and breaks. Pull out the ball. Inspect its surface - it should be smooth and clean. It is necessary to remove the seals and supporting springs - their poor condition can cause the tap to leak.
  3. If you are disassembling a faucet with a cartridge, then remove it and subject it to a thorough inspection.
  4. Replace the failed part.
  5. Reassemble the faucet in reverse order.

It is important! Do not tighten the nuts too tight, as this can lead to deformation of the sealing rubber and disruption of the normal operation of the mixer.

Installing a new cartridge

To extend the life of the product and ensure smooth running of its rubbing parts, you can use a special silicone lubricant.

Removing the mixer flywheel

Repair of a two-valve mixer

What to do if you have a two-valve faucet dripping in your kitchen? Almost everything is the same.

  • On the valve flywheel, pry off and remove the decorative cap.
  • Using a screwdriver, unscrew the screw that secures the flywheel.
  • Take off the flywheel. In front of you will be a crane box.
  • Unscrew it counterclockwise and inspect it.

  • If this is a worm-type axle box and the gasket is damaged, replace it separately - buy it in a store (it costs a penny) or cut it out of rubber of suitable thickness yourself. The axle box with ceramic discs is changed entirely.
  • Assemble the faucet in reverse order.

The general scheme of work on the repair of the mixer

Everything is as simple as possible and slightly resembles a designer. But a faucet leak is not the only problem you may encounter while using it in the kitchen.

Other faucet breakdowns and troubleshooting

The quality of water in many cities leaves much to be desired, so over time, the aerator in the tap can become dirty. From the inside, solid deposits “grow” on it. When there are too many of them, the pressure and quality of the water deteriorate significantly. The solution to the problem is to replace the aerator. Ideally, it can be easily unscrewed with an adjustable wrench, but for a stuck part, you will need WD40 or tapping with a hammer.

It is important! Perform all work carefully, otherwise the mixer will have to be changed completely.

The faucet is leaking, and during the inspection you found a crack in it? Then it's time to go for a new product. For a short time, silicone sealant can become an assistant.

You can extend the life of the mixer if you install a water filter and use the device carefully, without twisting the valves too much and without moving the lever sharply and all the way.

Now you know what to do if the faucet drips in the kitchen. In most cases, the considered repair schemes are also suitable for eliminating breakdowns of faucets in bathrooms. This is a good savings for the family budget. But if you are not confident in your abilities or you simply do not have time, a competent plumber will do all the work in a matter of minutes.

Any faucet installed in the kitchen has certain requirements - the softness of the water pressure, simple temperature control and, most importantly,.

Faucet in the kitchen under the water filter: the principle of operation and installation features with your own hands

please help me, my situation is much more complicated than the faucet in the kitchen you described (two faucets of the bay, and from the bottom there is a third pipe to the shower, ending with a brush for washing vegetables and going into a separate hole in the sink, it was sold together with a kitchen set, released in Voronezh approximately 1979-82 ) in operation only 5 years before that, it was just a pity to throw out a very convenient thing; there is a single-circuit column for heating water. The essence of the problem: when you open the tap, the water flows with good pressure for 1-2 seconds, then it disappears altogether, if you slowly open the tap, the pressure is maintained. if you go over some limit in terms of pressure, then it spontaneously turns off, taking into account the presence of a column, it was scalded several times during this day, or you open the tap, the water does not flow at all. (Yesterday after dinner I couldn’t wash the dishes) there was no water at all. If you open the faucet in the bathroom, the water in the faucet in the kitchen will not disappear, but the pressure will accordingly be small (if there is a counter for cold water, this is not a good idea). Calling a Zhekovsky plumber is useless (this summer I broke a cartridge in the bathroom on a joystick faucet, so he couldn’t remove it and said buy an old-style mixer with a bay faucet. I’ll put it on for you). my husband went and bought a new crane of the bay, rearranged it, but the problem did not disappear, if you can throw some constructive idea, please tell me. Thanks in advance Elochka.

Do-it-yourself faucet repair in the kitchen: step-by-step instructions and detailed video

When the faucet needs repair. The device of mixers of various types. A faucet is leaking in the kitchen - how to fix it, taking into account its design. Other problems in the operation of the mixer

Do-it-yourself kitchen faucet repair

The kitchen faucet provides us with water dozens of times a day. No wonder it breaks down more often than in the bathroom. Before you call a plumber or buy a new faucet, you should try to repair it yourself.

If you are reading this article, then one of these breakdowns has occurred with your mixer:

  • The faucet leaks, water drips from under the handle;
  • Water drips from the spout even when the valves are closed;
  • When the mixer is opened, a buzzing sound appears in the pipes;
  • The water jet is too thin;
  • The single-lever mixer works "jerks";
  • Water flows out from under the union nut on the spout;
  • The lever of the crane is not fixed in the desired position;
  • Leak in the flywheel area (valve structures).

What is needed for repair

Before you start repairing a kitchen faucet with your own hands, you need to prepare all the tools and necessary accessories for the faucet.

  • Key for hexagons;
  • Key for adjustment;
  • Knife-cutter;
  • Screwdriver and hammer.

Also, repairs require additional materials - dry rags, lubricants. And if the faucet leaks, then you will have to buy spare parts: a new cartridge or its parts (for a single-lever mixer), sealing rings, a faucet box (for a two-valve design).

We repair a single-lever ball-type mixer

There are four reasons why a crane needs to be repaired:

  • Cracks, chips caused by mechanical damage on the case;
  • Blockage in the cartridge between the seats and the ball;
  • Gasket wear;
  • Clogged or rusty aerator.

What to do if there is a defect on the case? You can try to repair it with cold welding - sealant (putty). But this, nevertheless, is a temporary measure, and soon you will still have to change the mixer.

If the problem is low water pressure, then most likely the cause is a clogged aerator. Then you need to get it, clean the mesh, for example, with a toothbrush, and then install it back.

Let's take a closer look at the malfunctions.

When the faucet leaks without visible damage, then the matter is most likely in violation of the integrity of the gasket or in the breakdown of the cartridge. In this case, a complete disassembly of the single-lever kitchen mixer is required.

How to disassemble the crane? First, turn off the water and let it run out of the faucet. Then study the device of a single-lever kitchen faucet in the photo.

Now let's start the repair step by step:

  1. A screw is unscrewed on the main body. It is usually hidden behind a decorative plug, which must be removed with a screwdriver, as shown in the photo.

Advice! You can disassemble and repair the device, even if you do not have a hex key at hand. To do this, the fixing nut is carefully tapped with a hammer on a screwdriver.

  1. The lever and cap are removed, and now we need to get the cartridge and inspect the entire device for defects. To do this, the cam washer is unscrewed with an adjustable wrench.
  1. The disassembled valve is inspected for defects: the gasket, the surface of the ball and the springs supporting the rubber seals in the holes are inspected. Settled springs and a worn tap are replaced if necessary. At this stage, all parts must be cleaned of accumulated water deposits.
  2. Most often, a leak from a faucet occurs due to a blockage between the ball and valve seats in the cartridge. In this case, you just need to change it. The whole complexity of this task lies in the proper choice of a cartridge, and repairing a mixer with your own hands is not difficult at all.

Advice! When heading to the plumbing store for a new cartridge, take the old one with you so as not to miscalculate with the size, because the cartridges are not standardized - they are produced in a wide variety of diameters and materials.

We install a new cartridge in such a way that its holes are aligned with the holes inside the mixer body. Then we screw the washer back (first with our hands, then tightly, but not too tight with a wrench).

  1. We check the quality of our work by running water. If it does not leak, then we proceed to install the cap, and then the lever - we twist the screw in it and fasten the plug.

How to change the gasket in the mixer? It's easy enough too. It is necessary to remove the old o-rings and change them to new ones, on which we first apply a little plumbing grease.

Advice! Use a non-toxic silicone-based lubricant for all moving parts of the product. This will double the service life of structural elements.

How to fix this type of mixer? It is necessary to disassemble and replace worn-out elements - a crane box and / or a gasket.

The sequence of work in this case will be as follows:

  1. The water is completely shut off, after which the valve handwheel is transferred to the working position so that excess pressure does not act on the parts.
  2. Next, you need to disassemble the structure - for this, decorative caps are removed and the screw fixing the flywheel is turned out. This will require a screwdriver. Next, the old axle box is replaced with a new one of a suitable size, and the structure is assembled back.

  1. If the gasket is worn out, then it is simply removed, and a new one, lubricated with sanitary grease, is installed in its place.

Often, valve mixers need to be repaired due to the fact that an oil seal has leaked in them. Then it needs to be disassembled according to the same algorithm and the worn packing should be replaced.

Advice! Replacing the packing is needed only when the sleeve is tightly tightened, and the leak is still present. As stuffing are used (for old mixers):

  • Rubber tube of appropriate dimensions;
  • Burlap threads;
  • Twine impregnated with drying oil.

If you see that the thread has worn off on the details, then this indicates that it is time to update the plumbing.

Being able to repair your kitchen faucet yourself is a great way to save money. However, not always repairs can fully restore the efficiency of the faucet and it is often easier to just change the faucet in the kitchen.

Keep in mind that:

  • The most durable are constructions made of heavy metals (brass);
  • The most poor-quality - Chinese or Turkish products from silumin;
  • The convenience of a single-lever device is obvious - it is opened with one free hand. It is also easier to repair, since there are fewer spare parts in the structure.
  • Faucet repair can be prevented. Most often, the main cause of malfunctions is pollution coming from the water main. Therefore, the installation of special coarse water filters will help you keep the faucet intact longer.

We repair the faucet in the kitchen correctly - step by step instructions (photo, video)

Simply and clearly about repairing faucets in the kitchen: what to do if the faucet is leaking, the pressure has become weak or the thread has worn off? How to disassemble and assemble the mixer?

Self-repair single-lever mixer

Single-lever faucets attract with their laconic design and easy control of the water flow. Turning on the water, changing its temperature and pressure - all this with one turn of the handle. These devices are reliable, have a solid service life - some branded ones give a 5-year warranty. Nevertheless, repair of a single-lever mixer is periodically necessary.

Types of single-lever mixers and their device

Despite the external similarity, rotary or single-lever mixers are of two types - with a cartridge (cartridge) and ball - with a ball inside. You can repair any of them, but for this you need to disassemble them first. And so that you can not only disassemble, but also assemble, it is advisable to familiarize yourself with the internal structure of each.

The design may be different, the structure remains the same

Cartridge mixer: structure

Cartridge faucets are so named because their locking and regulating mechanism is hidden in a special cartridge flask. In more expensive models of faucets, the cartridge body is made of ceramics, in cheaper models it is made of plastic. What these models are good for is ease of repair, but it is not always easy to achieve the required pressure with them - you need tighter control of the handle. But changing the temperature of the water is very easy - with a slight movement of the hand.

The structure of a single-lever faucet with a cartridge is simple. If you go from top to bottom:

  • Switch with fixing screw.
  • Locking (clamping) nut.
  • Cartridge. It mixes water flows, the same device shuts off the water.
  • The body of the mixer, in which there is a "seat" place for the cartridge.
  • Fasteners, studs and gaskets to ensure tightness.
  • Outflow (gander). It can be a separate part - in rotary models for the kitchen or part of the body - for sinks in the bathroom.
  • If the spout is separate, gaskets are still installed from below and there is another part of the body.

What is a single lever cartridge faucet made of?

The cartridge itself contains several (usually 4) specially shaped ceramic or metal discs. A rod is welded to the upper disk. By changing the position of the rod, we change the position of the plates relative to each other, changing the amount of water passing through the holes in the plates.

In order for the faucet / mixer to work normally, the plates are lapped very tightly. For this reason, cartridge single-lever mixers are very demanding on water quality. The ingress of foreign fragments between the plates leads to the fact that the valve flows or stops working altogether. To avoid this, some manufacturers put filters on the inlet pipes. But, it is better to put filters on the water supply and get clean water that can be safely supplied to household appliances.

Single Lever Ball Mixer

It got its name because of the element in which water is mixed - a ball with cavities. The ball is usually metal, hollow inside. Its outer part is polished to a shine. There are three holes in the ball - two for the entry of cold and hot water, one for the exit of already mixed water. A rod is attached to the ball, which enters the cavity on the handle. This rod with a rigidly attached ball changes the temperature of the water, its pressure.

The structure of a single-lever mixer with a ball mechanism for mixing water

It is easier to adjust the parameters with such a device - the parts are well ground in, the handle moves easily. Mixers with a ball mechanism are less critical to the presence of mechanical impurities, but do not respond very well to the presence of hardness salts and excess iron. So for normal operation, pre-filtering is also required here.

How to disassemble and repair a cartridge faucet

Repairing a single-lever cartridge faucet often consists of overhauling and cleaning the o-rings. Salts are deposited on them, debris and dirt accumulate because of which the faucet begins to leak. To eliminate this trouble, the mixer is disassembled, all parts are wiped from dirt (with warm soapy water), rinsed, dried, put in place.

The sequence of installation of parts in a cartridge single-lever mixer

Let's figure out how to disassemble the cartridge faucet. First turn off the water, and then the procedure is as follows:

  • Remove the decorative cap on the handle. Just pry it off with a screwdriver.
  • Behind it is a mounting screw. We unscrew it with a hex wrench and take it out.

First unscrew the fixing screw

Actually everything. Dismantled single-lever mixer with cartridge. As you can see, there are not many details. The main working part is the cartridge. In it, inside, mixing takes place.

Cartridge replacement

The cartridge itself has a sealing gasket - a rubber saddle at the bottom, which ensures a snug fit to the body. Over time, rubber loses elasticity, water begins to ooze. If this is the problem, you can first try to clean this ring from the salts and deposits that have formed on it. Put the cleaned part in place, check the work. If the leak does not stop, you will have to change the cartridge.

Cartridges for "one-handed" mixers

Faucet cartridges have different diameters, inlets and outlets are located differently in its lower part. Therefore, if you need to replace it, first you disassemble the mixer, get the treasured part and go to the store or the market with it. You need to choose exactly the same model without any deviations. At home, install the cartridge in the case, turn it slightly until you feel that it “sat down” in place. Next - assembly, it goes in the reverse order.

Install the clamp nut first. Actually, at this stage, you can check how the new cartridge works. Turn on the water, adjust the temperature and pressure with the rod. To make it more convenient, you can put a handle on the stem. If everything is fine, continue the assembly.

We disassemble and repair a single-lever ball mixer

The single-lever ball mixer was invented just over 40 years ago. Its design is simple and reliable - actually there is nothing to break. If problems arise, it is only because of poor-quality water - particles of dirt settle on the rubber saddles on which the ball rests. Contact deteriorates, water seeps in and the faucet starts to leak.

How to Disassemble Single Lever Ball Mixer

Some ball valves are also implemented with a cartridge. Only inside the cartridge are not plates, in a ball. Disassembly of this type is no different from that described above. All the difference is hidden inside the flask. There are also other types of faucets. In them, the locking ball is installed directly in the rubber socket. There are some minor differences here.

The tap lever is removed in the same way - first remove the plug, then unscrew the screw with a hexagon. Pull the lever up, remove it. After the action is very simple and

Repair of single-lever faucet for bathroom, kitchen

Self-repair of a single-lever faucet in the bathroom or kitchen is possible. You just need to know how to take them apart. Description with photos and videos in the article.

Do-it-yourself single-lever kitchen faucet repair

Single-lever faucets have literally flooded the domestic plumbing market in recent years. And this is not strange, since these devices, despite the simple internal structure, have a high level of reliability, and their repair costs a penny. Why are lever mixers so common and how to repair such a device yourself?

The best option for kitchen and bathroom - swivel faucet

There are quite a few different faucets on the modern plumbing market, which differ both in external and internal components. Some of them have built-in temperature sensors and electrical circuits, thanks to which you can set the water temperature as accurately as possible, others are as simple as possible. The latter can be safely attributed to articulated cranes, which are as simple as possible to install and maintain.

GROHE Professional Kitchen Faucet

The main advantage of single-lever faucets is the absence of any metal elements inside the main device (cartridge). Instead of them, parts made of ceramics are installed. They do not corrode and are not afraid of direct exposure to water. The only thing that can lead to their premature destruction is poor-quality and unfiltered water. Despite the fact that primitive filters are already installed in the cartridges inside the mixer, in some regions of our country they are simply useless. Therefore, it is advisable to take care of installing at least a local system of additional water filtration in advance.

Another advantage of single lever mixers is their modern and minimalist design. Only the main elements fall into the field of vision of a person, and the water supply, the main mechanisms are carefully hidden from prying eyes.

People opt for these mixers not only because of the simplicity of design or external characteristics, but also because of simple operation and economy. It is not necessary to adjust the optimum temperature each time, it is enough to put the lever in the desired position once.

BLANCO STEELART kitchen faucets

Before moving on to the main causes of failure, you need to consider what a standard representative of single-lever mixers consists of:

  • lever for adjusting and supplying water;
  • adjusting rod, on which the lever is attached directly;
  • a housing, inside of which there is either a hinged valve or a plastic cartridge with a ceramic filling;
  • adjustment ring, steam and adjustment cuffs.

The main causes of failure

Since there are currently several types of single-lever faucets on the market for plumbing fixtures, we will consider the most common types of breakdowns, as well as their causes.

The main reasons for the breakdown:

  1. In the role of the main distributor of water in swivel mixers, a steel ball acts. Unfortunately, it can corrode over time. Various gaskets and seals also wear out, through which water begins to pass. Wear parts must be replaced to bring the crane back to normal working condition.
  2. In the event that a ceramic cartridge is installed inside the faucet, some small debris that got either through the plumbing system or during the installation of the product may be the cause of the breakdown. Despite this, products with a ceramic cartridge inside are considered the most reliable and, if properly installed, can last a very long time.

Faucet repair: work procedure

Before proceeding with the repair of the mixer, it is necessary to shut off the water supply. After the water is shut off, open the faucet and wait for its remnants to drain. Since all work will be carried out in close proximity to the surface of the sink, it is advisable to cover it with a cloth. It is quite enough to put an unnecessary rag in the place where the mixer is located.

The following procedure may vary slightly, depending on the model and type of faucet used, but the overall picture of the repair looks something like this:

  1. First, we need to get rid of the special decorative cap that is located on the front of the mixer. It is an indicator of cold and hot water. Under the cap is a fixing screw that must be unscrewed.
  2. Removes the lever. There is no need to exert excessive effort, since mixers are most often made of cheap metal alloys and the design can be easily damaged. If the lever does not give in, then you can pour hot water over it for several minutes.
  3. Under the lever is a decorative dome, which also needs to be carefully removed.
  4. Next, we must remove the clamping nut, which is responsible for ensuring that the structure is in place.
  5. Depending on the type of faucet, there may be a distributing ball and other elements of a swivel mixer inside, as well as a plastic cartridge with ceramic discs inside. In the first case, you need to make sure the integrity of the ball itself, check the condition of the gaskets, seals and the spring that holds the valve in place. If necessary, we replace the elements. If you have a cartridge installed, then carefully remove it and head to the nearest store, where we are looking for a replacement.
  6. Leakage can also occur directly under the spout. In this case, it is necessary to replace the old seals.
  7. Under the cartridge, as a rule, there are rubber saddles, which eventually become unusable. We wash off the remnants of dirt and other debris that got in the process of operation.
  8. In the case of replacing the cartridge, before installing a new one, it is necessary to thoroughly clean the seat itself from corrosion and rust. During installation, make sure that the latches fit exactly into the grooves, otherwise the mixer will not work properly.

If the repair did not bring a visible effect or only partially corrected the problem, then you need to find other possible causes of the problem. Consider other possible problems:

  1. A clogged aerator causes the water pressure to be very different from that in the bathroom. To fix the problem, you need to remove this element and clean it thoroughly. If rust is the cause of its malfunction, then this element will have to be completely replaced.
  2. The strong noise of the tap when water is supplied may indicate that the gaskets do not fit. This is especially true when you cut them yourself. In this case, we disassemble the mixer and cut off the gaskets.
  3. The water pressure in the faucet can also be significantly reduced due to blockages in the connecting flexible hoses or water pipes. After cleaning the faucet, replace the hoses with new ones, as deposits may form on the old ones, which will lead to repeated failure of the cartridge or hinge.
  4. If the faucet is in the bathroom and during the bathing process, the water direction switch lever drops by itself, then it is necessary to replace the gasket, which is hidden under the spool. There is no need to dismantle the mixer for this, just unscrew the nut and remove the hose itself, after which we change the gasket and return everything to its place.
  5. It is much more difficult to replace the bottom gasket, since it is necessary not only to disconnect the hose, but also to remove the adapter along with the spout. Next, the switch, eccentric and spool are completely removed, after which we change the gasket and assemble everything in the reverse order.

Do-it-yourself repair of a single-lever faucet at home is inherently quite simple and does not require special plumbing skills. The only thing you need to constantly remember is that such devices do not like to be abused.

If you think about the ease of repair, then you need to think in advance what type of mixer you will install. It can be a product both on a hinged basis and on cartridges. The former are less whimsical about water quality, while the latter can be repaired in a matter of minutes, since most malfunctions directly affect the cartridge itself. The average cost of such a cartridge is 100-150 rubles, which is good news, however, to select the desired model, you will have to bring an old spare part with you. This is due to the fact that each manufacturer is trying in every possible way to improve their products and at the moment you can find dozens or even hundreds of different models. Especially such a craving for something new is distinguished by products from a Chinese manufacturer.

Do-it-yourself single-lever kitchen faucet repair

The main types and causes of breakdowns of single-lever mixers. Step by step text and video repair instructions

If the faucet in the kitchen is leaking, how to fix it is an important question. Surely many have noticed that water is dripping from the tap, and this happens even when the lever or screw is closed. In this case, you can quickly fix the problem, knowing the source. However, what to do if it is not clear why it is dripping from the tap and what to do about it? Today we will talk in detail about how to find the cause of the leak and how to get rid of it. In addition, do not forget that from time to time preventive measures will be a great addition to avoiding leakage.

Leakage is the most famous problem situation that occurs with plumbing. It doesn't matter if it's in the kitchen or bathroom. Faucet leakage can occur for many reasons.

Table number 1. Causes of leaky faucets.

CauseSolution
Poor mixer qualityOften, wanting to save some money, people prefer lower cost faucets. But it is worthwhile to understand that cheap taps can let water through. It is unlikely that you will be able to avoid this problem if you have already purchased such a mixer. Therefore, when buying, always choose only tools from trusted manufacturers whose products you are sure of. It also happens that you buy a product from a well-known brand at a low cost. Here you need to be able to distinguish a fake from the original, because a common model is unlikely to be sold for a penny.
Incorrect mixer installationThis is the second most common reason. Most often occurs in people who, having no experience, install the mixer on their own. Also included here are cases of improper assembly of the faucet. With such errors, often even the most expensive faucets lose all their advantages, begin to drip, rust, creak. in the hands of a mixer with unfamiliar designs or fastening systems, etc. If you give this work into the hands of a master, be sure to check the qualifications, otherwise you risk wasting time and money.
Incorrect use of the mixerAlthough the mixer provides for the possibility of torsion and movement in the other direction, or the rotation of the screws, you still need to work with it with extreme caution. Problems in this direction can arise if you applied a lot of force during the installation of the mixer, turned the tap itself at the wrong angle, lifted up or pressed down, unscrewed the screws further than expected. All this spoils the product and in the future can lead not only to the leak of the tap, but also to the final break. In this case, there is only one solution - to buy another tap and handle it carefully.
Part wearFew people think that the crane is literally "outliving" itself. The constant switching on and off of the lever, the movement of parts wears out materials over time. This happens especially often with rubber gaskets. It is not difficult to solve this when some materials have been damaged. Here it will be enough to replace them. You can prevent this if you carry out preventive maintenance of cranes.
Equipment expiration dateAlthough this happens less often, even this cause can lead to a water leak. As a result, you will also have to buy a new faucet, which can last several years with proper operation.

What do you need to repair a faucet?

First you need to find the source of the problem. They are in different places:

  1. Valve. Drops appear on the element that opens and closes the water.
  2. The faucet itself. Here the liquid flows in a small stream or drips. Naturally, water leaks even when the lever is off.
  3. Joint mixer and spout.
  4. A hole in the mixer, from this hole you can see the liquid.
  5. The joint of the tap with plumbing systems or at attachment to the countertop.

Before repairing the faucet, be sure to close the water supply of both temperatures. Then proceed to repair work. Moreover, many masters advise to completely change the tap.

Water from the faucet

Often the liquid is seen right under the valve. Here the problem lies in a worn-out crane box.

To organize the solution, see if space has formed at the faucet box and the mixer itself. Replace the gaskets (they may not be worn out, but should be changed), a preventive action will help improve the performance of the product.

Tap water

This situation proves that the crane box is no longer suitable. Often this appears in economical models that are not of particular quality.

To remedy the situation, install another crane box and directly replace the valve itself.

Water between faucet and spout

This is not difficult to fix - you just need to put other gaskets. Another reason is sometimes the untwisted part, which appears during the long operation of the product. However, in the second case, the replacement of gaskets does not hurt.

Water oozing at the pipe connection

This occurs when the product is installed incorrectly. Especially if the worker, tightening the nuts, applies a lot of force, after which he tightens them. Hoses made from poor materials can also be affected. The latter case requires their replacement, and at the same time the replacement of gaskets.

Important. During operation, make sure that the crane is firmly attached to the table. If it loosens easily, replace the gaskets. An excellent solution would be to install on silicone, after which the leaks will stop completely. You can read about how to install a faucet in the kitchen in ours.

Water seeps out of the body

The repair process in such a situation is difficult, you will have to remove the entire body. Below we offer step-by-step instructions for repairing a faucet when water leaks from its body

Step 1. Shut off the water supply in the house (if you live in the private sector), apartment or one branch.

Step 2 Unscrew the hoses, all fastenings of the product to the countertop.

Step 3 Remove the snap ring.

Step 4 Take new o-rings, firmly plant them in the grooves.

Step 5 Put the gander in its original place, secure the ring.

Step 6 Reinstall the hose. Don't touch the case itself. Turn on the water supply, make sure everything works. If yes, install the case. If not, then you made a mistake in the above points.

Leak Prevention

Prevention is useful in everything, and crane operation is no exception. In order for the mixer to continue to supply water without leaks, it is necessary to carry out preventive measures in time. Such a procedure can take several hours, but it will help prevent major breakdowns or an unexpected mandatory replacement of the crane.

You can do it in the following order:

  1. The first step is to collect a bucket of water, turn off the water supply.
  2. Then slightly unscrew the junction of the countertop with the drain. Sometimes you have to cut the sealant that connects the sink to the cabinet, and then lift the sink with a spatula. This is necessary for easy removal of the mixer. Don't forget to unscrew the bolts!
  3. Remove the plug from the tap lever, remove the screw from under it.
  4. Now we disassemble the mixer itself. Carefully inspect each element for damage, rust, and wash with water and detergent.
  5. Examine the rubber parts. Replace if they are dry or torn.
  6. Then assemble the structure back, install the mixer.

You need to perform these actions at least once, and preferably two or three times a year.

Lever Crane Repair

A faucet that has a lever instead of screws is much easier to use: a small movement is enough to create the required temperature, jet pressure. But often you have to pay for this convenience, often it manifests itself in the breakdown of the cartridge, which will need to be replaced. The cartridges themselves were created in two varieties:

  1. Disk. The main detail here is plates made of ceramics and moving with the rotation of the lever in different directions.
  2. Ball. Here the workpiece is a ball that combines three small holes. By turning the mixer lever, the ball inside it rotates, and this changes the pressure of the flowing liquid and the temperature level.

How to understand that a mixer part needs to be replaced? You may notice one of the following reasons:

  • even when the lever is closed, the liquid flows;
  • you have to press to move the lever, as it is very tight;
  • fluid supply is slow, or not at all;
  • liquid appears in the area of \u200b\u200bthe lever itself.

To put another cartridge, you need to remove the tap, turning off the water before that. Then disassemble and carefully examine all the elements of the cartridge. Among them, you will surely find a part that has already worn out - this is what needs to be replaced. After replacement, assemble the entire structure in reverse order and put the crane in place.

What are the risks during the acquisition and operation of the product

We talked about the repair of this kitchen product. But in addition to this, you need to understand what risks exist during the purchase of a tap and use associated with a breakdown of the mixer:

  1. Don't buy cheap products. Often, these mixers are made from strange alloys, and not at all from steel, as they say on the packaging. Such products break down quickly. An important disadvantage is also the fact that you cannot fix this mixer; you will definitely have to go to a specialized store for a new one. The main thing is not to take the same crane, hoping that it will work better. Therefore, an important rule: do not save on such things - you risk overpaying even more.
  2. Buy products only from those brands that have long been known in the market. You can ask your friends what kind of faucet they use, how well it works. Also, do not hesitate to ask the advice of a consultant in the store - they will help you choose a product. Often these cranes have an average cost. There is no point in buying an expensive product (solely for the sake of design), but also taking a crane for 700 rubles.
  3. Together with the tap, purchase and install a special filter that will thoroughly clean the water. This is usually required for those whose water contains grains of sand and other small components.
  4. Install a device that will help protect the faucet from salt and hardness. At the same time, the sink will become much more attractive in appearance, and the mixer will work much longer.

How to replace the gasket inside the faucet

If liquid is leaking from a closed mixer, usually the source of this situation is element wear. With prolonged use, the gasket loses its elasticity, begins to lag behind the seat somewhat, and liquid can flow even from the switched off mixer, because it finds other penetration paths. In advanced situations, water not only drips, but pours in a trickle.

However, you do not need to be afraid of this, because it is easy to return the mixer to the correct operation - you just need to buy a rubber gasket, install it instead of the old, worn one. For this, a maximum of a specific key of the right size, a pair of gaskets, can be useful.

It has already been noted many times that before starting any work, you need to turn off the water in the entire room. After that, it will not be superfluous to check whether the water is exactly turned off by turning on the tap, only then get to work.

Remove the faucet using the available wrench. It is recommended to wrap the crane with a cloth so as not to damage it. When you cover it with a rag, you can attach the key and unscrew it. After removing the head, remove the valve and remove the old gasket or valve, replacing the worn element with a new one. In this case, the valve can be pry off with a knife, screwdriver, awl - anything.

When choosing gaskets, you need to pay attention to their size and other important components. For example, the edges must be beveled at an angle of about 45 degrees. If the slope is different, the faucet will make loud noises during water supply. In the absence of such a gasket in the store - buy a regular one and cut it yourself.

Video - How to put a rubber gasket

Screw the case to the tabletop. Modern products do not require winding. Moreover, it is even contraindicated in these mixers, because cracks often appear because of it. The situation is different with cranes purchased back in the USSR. Here you need to put a tow on the thread, grease with a special paste and twist. Only after all these procedures can you try to turn on the water.

Often a different situation occurs - the liquid does not flow at all or flows in a thin stream. Here the decision is not difficult. The reason for this is often the same - the gasket has left the stem and does not allow water supply. You can try turning the tap on and off 10-15 times, thereby trying to move the gasket. If it does not work, you need to remove the tap and put the rubber element in place. It is also recommended to put only purchased.

Video - Replace the gaskets correctly on the lever

The faucet drips for many reasons and in many places. However, often the reason is one of two things: either you have a poor-quality product, or the gasket has already worn out. In the second case, you need to replace with a new one. You can contact a plumber who will quickly fix the leak. To prevent this, you need to use only mixers that are published by common manufacturers, and not save on this.

Most owners are accustomed to solving the nuances of household repairs with their own hands, without resorting to the help of various “masters for an hour”. And it's not just about saving, fixing minor problems with modern plumbing is an interesting and quite feasible task even for a beginner.

But in order to succeed, you need to know the principle of operation of the device and its weaknesses. Let's try to analyze in detail one of the problems - how to repair ball mixer in the bathroom or in the kitchen.

The ball faucet has a sleek and modern look that makes it a great addition to any kitchen or bathroom décor.

But its main advantage is comfortable use. Indeed, unlike the valve design, in order to adjust the pressure and temperature of the water flow, you do not need to turn the knobs in search of the “golden mean”, but simply set the switch in the optimal position and put it into operation with one movement of the hand.

The ball mixer is very easy to operate: the water temperature is adjusted by moving the lever to the right / left, and the pressure - up / down

The design of a typical ball valve consists of the following mandatory elements:

  • Control lever- Rotary knob that sets the flow force and water temperature. It is attached to the body with a screw closed with a decorative cap, on which the designations of cold and hot water are indicated in color or letters.
  • metal cap, fixing the valve mechanism on the body.
  • "Cam"- a plastic part with a figured washer, which ensures the movement of the "ball" in a certain range. The washer itself has a domed shape and is equipped with rubber seals.
  • mixing chamber- a steel hollow “ball”, fixed with a system of saddle valves and springs. It has several openings: two for hot and cold water inlet and one for the outlet of the mixed flow through the faucet spout. In some designs, the "ball" is enclosed in a special protective capsule - a cartridge.
  • metal case with spout.
  • Circular nut, fixing the body on the sink.

The system is operated by a lever. When it is lifted, the “ball” inside the faucet begins to rotate, and when the holes are aligned with similar recesses in the saddles, water is supplied to the spout. Depending on how complete this coincidence was, the pressure and temperature of the flow are regulated.

A ball mixer is easy to repair - all consumables can be found on sale, but in order not to be mistaken with the size, do not throw out the failed spare part, but take it with you to the store.

In more detail - about the troubles that happen with a plumbing fixture, and how to eliminate them.

Ball mixer problems

Although ball valves are considered one of the simplest and most reliable designs, from time to time they fail due to natural wear of parts or under the influence of external factors. Consider the most common breakdowns that may occur during the operation of such a mixer.

Cannot adjust jet temperature

If the mixing of hot and cold flows occurs in a chaotic mode, the problem lies in the failure of the ball cartridge or rubber "saddle". The cause of the breakdown is most often the blockage of the space between the "saddle" and the holes of the "ball".

The crane will have to be disassembled to inspect the parts for damage. If such are found, the gaskets or the entire “ball” will have to be replaced - no putty with sealant and other tricks will give a long-term effect.

Such breakdowns most often occur due to the poor quality of water treatment in the water supply system at home. And we are talking not only about mechanical inclusions - particles of rust and other small litter. The problem may be in the increased hardness of the water.

If water with an excess of mineral impurities is supplied to your region, it would be useful to study the mixer passport before buying - many manufacturers specifically indicate acceptable hardness for the smooth operation of their products.

If you do not want to regularly repair and replace plumbing, install a filtration system that will purify the water. Mechanical filters will extend the life of plumbing throughout the house

For a bathroom, where water is used mainly for technical purposes, the simplest mechanical filter is quite enough, which will simply protect the plumbing from impurities.

But for the kitchen, you can install a system that improves not only the quality, but also the composition of water, enriching it with deficient trace elements. There are many options here - from simple cartridge filters to systems.

Weak water pressure at maximum opening

The reason may lie not in the faucet itself, but also in the low pressure in the water supply system of a house or apartment. Therefore, before disassembling the structure, make sure that water comes from other taps with good pressure. If, nevertheless, it was confirmed that only one mixer was “to blame”, check if the aerator on the spout is clogged.

In the water sometimes comes across sand, rust particles from worn pipes or limescale, which accumulates on the mesh and interferes with the free flow. To make sure that the reason is precisely in - remove it and turn on the water again.

To check the condition of the aerator, it is enough to unwind the tip of the spout with your hands or with a plumbing key wrapped in electrical tape beforehand

If the flow has increased to the required value, you just need to thoroughly rinse the grid and install it in its original place. Of course, if a part is broken or rusted, it is better to replace it with a new one.

When replacing the spring with a new part, the diameter should be slightly smaller than the previous one - this will ensure a tighter fit to the stem

Conclusions and useful video on the topic

More clearly, the process of disassembling and repairing the device can be studied in the video:

And the last piece of advice: do not save money when buying a faucet, since not only water quality and other external factors affect its life, but also the materials from which the faucet design itself is made.

If you choose a cheap model, most likely it will be made of silumin (an inexpensive alloy of aluminum and silicon). Although such cranes look very attractive both in terms of price and appearance, they quickly lose their original gloss and fail. Therefore, for a long service without accidents and regular repairs, it is worth taking a closer look at the proven time of brass.

But, it is better to supply and get clean water, which can be safely supplied to household appliances.

Let's figure out how to disassemble the cartridge faucet. First turn off the water, and then the procedure is as follows:

After the action is very simple and similar to those described above:

  • We unscrew the cap, preferably with our hands, since it is usually made of thin metal, it is easy to bend it.
  • We unscrew the clamping nut, there is a washer under it, we remove it too.
  • Opened access to the ball. We pull the rod, we take out the ball.
  • There are two saddles under the ball, with springs so that the elastic bands are pressed against the ball more tightly.

All disassembled. Next is the repair of a single-lever mixer. In theory, the problem is that deposits have accumulated at the point of contact between the ball and the seat. They must be removed - carefully clean, wipe. There may be issues with the springs. They also sometimes accumulate dirt, but more often they simply lose their elasticity.

The third source of problems is the ball itself. In general, it should be made of stainless steel, respectively, it only needs to be cleaned of deposits. In reality, this is not always the case - cheap taps have appeared even with plastic balls or cheap metal. In this case, peeling of the surface or other similar troubles may be observed. Such a locking element will no longer work normally. It must be replaced. With the ball, you also go to the store, select a replacement of the right size. Assembling the mixer in reverse order: springs from the saddle, there is no place for the saddle, there is a ball on them, etc. When assembling the entire structure, carefully center everything - the skew will lead to rapid wear and the faucet will leak again.

Repair of a single-lever faucet with a swivel spout

Faucets with a swivel spout are installed on sinks in the kitchen or bathroom. From time to time, a leak starts from under it. The locking mechanism in this case is not to blame, just the gaskets have lost their elasticity or the lubricant has dried up.

In this case, disassemble the mixer as described above, then remove it by pulling up the spout. Remove all old gaskets. If they are stuck, you can use a flathead screwdriver or even a knife blade. You need to remove them, but they still need to be replaced. On the removed gaskets, select new ones. It is desirable that they be made of silicone, not rubber. Silicone is more elastic, retains its properties longer, better tolerates contact with water.

Lubricate new gaskets with sanitary silicone grease, install in place. Install the spout in place. It must be pressed down well so that it rests against the union nut on the mixer body. Next is the assembly of the rest of the mechanism.

The faucet is running! This is probably the most common expression in the topic of plumbing repairs. In this article, we will analyze how you can fix a single-lever or, as it is also called, a flag mixer.

They are widely used due to their ease of use, and most likely, they are used by you in the bathroom and in the kitchen.

The main control element of such a mixer is a cartridge, and if water flows from under the lever of your tap, then it's time to change this element. This is not difficult, it is enough to know the order of work.

Let's get started!

Faucet repair in photo examples

First of all, you need to remove the decorative cap - a plug, which, using colored marks, indicates the position of the lever for supplying cold and hot water

The opened hole gives access to the fixing screw that fixes the cartridge and the lever

Using a screwdriver (usually negative, but not always), unscrew the screw and remove the lever

Then we unscrew and remove the decorative cover, which is attached to the external thread of the circular nut

Using a wrench, unscrew and remove the circular nut

We take out the damaged cartridge and change it to a new one of the same size (the common diameter is 35 mm and 40 mm)

There are two conical protrusions on the cartridge, which play the role of guides, they must coincide with the place of their landing in the mixer body.

We repeat the assembly of the mixer in the reverse order. If the case is not damaged by corrosion (it happens) and has no mechanical damage, then the cause of the leak has been eliminated!

Lever and have a similar structure, so the leak from under the lever is repaired in the same way, by replacing the cartridge.
