Network mode wcdma and gsm what. What is CDMA and WCDMA in the phone

What should I choose in my case? GSM or WCDMA?

  1. Which network mode to choose in the phone, WCDMA or GSM? What is the difference? In modern phones, there are usually 3 network modes in the settings:
    1) WCDMA only
    2) Only GSM
    3) GSM / WCDMA (auto mode)

    Which mode is better to choose?

    Only GSM

    GSM is a standard for mobile cellular communications, on which our main mobile operators initially built their networks. By the way, although it was our first in a row, it belongs to the second generation of cellular communication standards - 2G. It handles voice calls very well, and if you don't use the Internet, this is the best option for you. GSM coverage is the largest and most stable. And the phone will work much longer than in WCDMA mode.

    Also, the "GSM only" option should be selected if you use the Internet, but only for reading news or using mail and instant messengers. GSM networks have an add-on for data transfer - GPRS, which provides mobile Internet speeds up to 171.2 kbps. And there is an add-on above the add-on - EDGE, which allows you to download data at speeds up to 474 kbps. GPRS coverage is available almost everywhere, and EDGE coverage is available in every more or less large settlement.

    WCDMA only

    WCDMA is a third generation (3G) cellular communication standard. It was implemented as a superstructure over 2G/GSM networks. It allows you to transmit both voice and data. At the same time, data is transmitted much faster than in the case of GPRS/EDGE - up to 2-3 Mbps. The quality of voice communication is not particularly different from the GSM version. However, 3G/WCDMA coverage is inferior to GSM coverage and is generally not available outside the city. Therefore, if the stability of voice communication is important to you and you are out of town, then you cannot choose this option.

    If you are constantly in the city and you need fast Internet, then the WCDMA Only option will be optimal for you. It is even better than the GSM / WCDMA option, because it will save battery power (the GSM radio module will not work) and the connection will not “jump” between standards (and fail) when moving around the city.

    GSM / WCDMA (auto mode)

    This mode is usually set by default. It is universal and provides both voice communication everywhere and high-speed mobile Internet in cities. However, as we have already noted above, in this mode, the energy consumption will be maximum. After all, both radio modules will work. And since the radio module consumes maximum energy in places where the signal is weak, then outside the city the battery will run down especially quickly. Therefore, outside the city, it is recommended to switch the phone to GSM Only mode.

  2. It's better to ask those who live there.

Modern technologies allow much that was unthinkable a few decades ago. WCDMA is a communication format that has become a full-fledged GSM receiver.

Thanks to WCDMA, it has become possible in many countries to transmit a large amount of information over cellular networks. The maximum transfer speed reaches two megabits per second. That is, a musical composition of medium duration will be downloaded in 20 seconds.

In the Republic of Ukraine, GSM-standard networks are still widely used. In the line of generations, it can be classified as 2.5G. The maximum data transfer rate does not exceed 18 KB per second.

The main difference between the outdated standard and the relatively new one is the allocation of high priority to the voice. That is, only what remains of 18 KB is allocated for the Internet and MMS.

Chinese manufacturers of modern gadgets widely use the WCDMA standard in their products. For example, all Chinese iPhones can work in 3G networks without any problems.

LTE continues to march around the world today. Most of the post-Soviet republics already have this technology. Almost all modern branded gadgets are equipped with it.

The output speed of mobile gadgets today is comparable to the broadband Internet, which has a fixed access point (home personal computer).

It should also be noted that the segment of wearable electronics (smart watches, smart glasses) is actively developing. Experts predict an increase in production in the aforementioned IT sector by 2.5 times by next year.

Naturally, the WCDMA format will only affect smart watches, which will be able to both make and receive calls without communication with a smartphone.

In fact, such devices already exist today (including their cheap Chinese clones). However, the problem is that they cannot yet be compact enough.

Various formats and communication standards provide Internet access of varying quality.

This depends not only on the hardware capabilities of the phone, network load, range, etc., but also on the technical characteristics of the network format itself, their architecture and coverage area.

One of the network formats is WCDMA (W-CDMA) - what it is, how it works, and what technical characteristics it has, is described in this material.

Definition

Literally, this abbreviation stands for Wideband Code Division Multiple Access, which translates as code division multiple access, wideband.

This is a relatively old communication format - such an interface (radio interface) technology was used even during operation.

The more innovative fourth generation network format LTE interacts with this air interface format much less, however, this type of communication still has certain prospects.

This term is also used not only to designate, but also to designate an independent type of cellular network.

It was designed as an add-on to the traditional GSM format and has remained in the add-on format to this day.

Fundamental differences from GSM

As mentioned above, WCDMA is an integrated add-on for GSM networks.

Why was this add-on created and what is the fundamental difference between these two formats?

Advice. Also, if you buy a local SIM card, then the chances that it works in GSM format are very high, much higher than that you will find a WCDMA network. Therefore, for trips abroad, it is better to have a GSM-type device.

Modern mobile devices from Lenovo and other manufacturers are equipped with a large number of different features that make the phone convenient and comfortable to use. One of these features is called a communication standard. There are several of them. Not many smartphone owners have an idea about which ones are used in devices in order to communicate with other users. Let's consider what is WCDMA, GSM in the phone and why they are needed in more detail.

concept Gsm

Everyone knows that the transmitting information is encrypted in the form of numbers. To receive and send it in an undistorted form through various devices and equipment, it must comply with certain formats, such as LTE, WCDMA, GSM. On one of them, namely GSM, which belongs to the second generation of standards, mobile operators initially built networks. GSM has a number of advantages:

  • enables manufacturers to produce miniature mobile devices;
  • the devices are equipped with a wide range of functions: a calculator, a voice recorder, a video camera, an mp3 player and others that are no less interesting and necessary;
  • communication is distinguished by good sound and a low level of extraneous interference;
  • conversations and transmitting messages in devices with this standard are not listened to, as they are reliably protected;
  • communication is characterized by low cost, availability, there are fewer stations per unit area;
  • a fairly large coverage area.

This standard is supported in more than 100 states. When buying a mobile device with a GSM format and a frequency of 900 MHz, you should know that it works in Russia, European, African, Asian countries.

Understanding LTE and WCDMA

LTE, WCDMA, GSM: what is it? This is a question of interest to mobile device users. These are technologies that allow you to receive and transmit information from one device to another. WCDMA is a third generation standard providing broadband access for 3G support. It allows better data transfer due to higher speed. This allows users to not only upload images, visit websites, but also view videos. WCDMA is suitable for users who use a Lenovo phone or other smart phone to connect with subscribers and surf the network. Main advantages:

  • high speed;
  • reliability in data exchange;
  • independence from a particular tower.

The consumer, while using the device, does not notice that he has moved from one coverage area to another. This will not affect the reception of the signal in any way, even if the person crossed the border of another country. WCDMA is a promising standard that has proven to be highly reliable. It is used in Russia, providing owners of devices with 3G communication services.

GSM, WCDMA, LTE are similar technologies but have differences. If WCDMA is used in the construction of 3G networks, then the LTE format is closer to the innovative, relatively recently developed formats - 4G. When compared with other existing standards, the throughput of LTE is increased by 10 times. Thus, it makes a smooth transition from 3G to 4G. Its main task is to reduce the load on the network used during the transmission of information.

Therefore, the question - GSM WCDMA LTE what it is, is quite reasonable, since any owner of a mobile device needs to choose the required speed. First you need to decide for what purposes the smartphone will be used. Then, resorting to the help of Wi-Fi, find the most acceptable speed for yourself. After that, you can start buying a tariff plan with the selected format.

Now users know what is GSM, WCDMA in the phone. Using the characteristics of the device, you can find in it a mention of the format.

Hello friends!

Most likely, you once came across such concepts as wcdma and gsm when choosing a new smartphone or cellular provider. But do you know what these terms mean and how they differ? To make the right choice, you need to consider in detail what wcdma and gsm are in your phone and which of these network types to choose. Go…

What is GSM

GSM has become the global cellular communication system. It is now the mobile communications technology on a global scale, especially in Asia and Europe, and is available in more than 210 countries. GSM uses a variant of TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access), which divides frequencies into multiple channels.

What is WCDMA

CDMA is a standard developed as the basis for the CDMA2000 and WCDMA standards for 3G. But WCDMA has not been able to get such a global adoption as GSM. Today it is used by less than 18% of networks worldwide (mainly the USA, South Korea and Russia).

What is their technical difference?

WCDMA vs GSM: What's the difference?

Both technologies are multi-access, which means that one tower can receive multiple calls. But the main difference between them comes from how exactly the data is converted into radio waves that the device receives and broadcasts.

The main problem for telecommunication companies was the difference in frequency bands. Because of it, GSM-enabled phones could not communicate with WCDMA networks, and vice versa. To overcome this shortcoming, most manufacturers had to use different frequency bands for 2G and 3G networks. This made it possible to use cellular phones in almost any network and anywhere in the world.

Until the advent of 4G LTE technology, the main difference between GSM and WCDMA devices was related to the SIM card. GSM-enabled phones were made with a SIM card slot, while CDMA devices were not.

In other words, WCDMA is a technology based on the use of a phone with a subscriber number that is associated with a specific 3G device. If you want to change your phone, you need to contact the provider, deactivate the old device and connect the new one.

In GSM devices, the number is associated with the SIM card, so to switch to another one, all you have to do is insert the SIM card into the new gadget.

WCDMA is a new generation (3G) mobile communication mode. Voice and data can be transmitted through it, and this happens much faster. The quality of communication practically does not differ in these modes. But WCDMA coverage most often does not catch outside the city.

Therefore, if you often travel outside the city limits and communication is important to you, choose GSM. And if you are most often in the city and want to use high-speed Internet, WCDMA is more suitable for you. The advantage of this network mode is that it saves battery power, and the connection will not fail while moving around the city.

You can also select automatic mode (switching between networks depending on the quality of coverage). It will provide Internet and voice communication anywhere within the reach of radio waves. But its disadvantage is the increased energy consumption, because two radio modules work simultaneously.

And since the radio module uses more power where the signal is weakly accessible, the battery will drain very quickly outside the city. Therefore, when leaving, switch to GSM.

To enable the required network mode in Android smartphones (Meizu, Xiaomi, Lenovo, Prestigio, etc.), go to Settings > Mobile networks > Network mode > enable WCDMA / GSM / UMTS / HSDPA+.
